Jared hates playing with dolls.

Not that he was doing it willingly, no way. But dolls are almost always five-year-old Julia's toys of choice, and she almost always forces her older brother to play with her. She never fails to want to create some kind of domestic or otherwise real life-reflective setting, like within her dollhouse or toy shopping mall. Which, of course, is far too boring for Jared.

Julia often got upset when he tried to make one of his action figures attack her make-believe suburbia for a more exciting story, though, so he'd long given up on trying to sway her from her norms. Her doll family norm was rather traditional and always included two males and two females: father, mother, brother, sister. That's what's familiar to her.

That's what's familiar to him, too, except different. His real life family consists of himself, a father, a mother, and a younger sister. That's what his other family looks like, too. Two sets. Near mirror images.

Naturally put in charge of controlling the boy dolls, Jared tries to follow whatever Julia asks of him. "It's cold outside today," she says, and so they have to change every doll's clothes to fit the chilly weather.

"Now they're going to the mall," she says, and they stick the dolls into a hot pink toy convertible and roll off.

"Now they have to cook dinner," she says, and they're back at the dollhouse concocting plastic miniature meals.

"Who's your favorite sister?" she asks, and that's different and out of the blue and unrelated, aside from the fact that she's serving a plate to the sister doll. Still, Jared doesn't miss a beat.

"You and Melanie," he replies. Even though he hates playing dolls, Julia's still (one of) his favorite(s). Part of him expects her to be pleased with that answer, maybe even give him a hug for it, but she just looks disappointed.

"No!" Julia counters. She makes a big show of folding her fingers to make the number one with a hand and waves it in front of his face. "You can only pick one."

He swats her hand away, and the corners of his mouth curl into a confused frown. "But I can't pick one. It's not that easy. You're both my favorite."

And it's true. They are both his favorite. He's close to Julia because, well, she's physically close. He sees her not every single day, but most days of the year. They go to school at the same time, they go to the park after school together, he reads her stories because she can't yet, she pesters him like only a five-year-old sister can. But Melanie is seven years old, closer to his age. They see each other significantly less, they always miss each other's birthdays and they communicate through letters and phone calls most of the year, but they bond over stuff in a way that he and Julia can't. Melanie likes, for example, the same cartoons and movies and things he does, the ones that Julia doesn't care for as much because she prefers programs for preschoolers.

They're different, but they're both his favorite. That's unacceptable to Julia, though. She's too young to get it.

"I'm telling Mom you're being mean!" she declares and scurries off, toys forgotten. He doesn't protest because he knows their mother will understand his tough decision.

He does, however, give the doll family another glance and wonders if being in a traditional family actually is any easier.

"Do you know what nepotism is?"

Charlotte almost laughs, but mostly clears her throat instead. "Yes, Jared, I know what nepotism is."

"It's when famous people or people in charge give jobs and stuff to their relatives and friends, even if they don't really deserve it," he explains matter-of-factly, even though she hadn't asked. His brows furrow.

"And you're bringing this up because...?" He can't tell if her tone is more curious or impatient. After all, he hadn't come to the office to discuss stage names. They'd been going over how he and the agency would proceed with auditions and general acting business when he moved out to Toronto. The name change just seemed like the natural next topic.

"I think I wanna change my name. You know, use something different for acting."

Charlotte doesn't say anything for what feels like an eternity to Jared. Was this a bad idea? Maybe it was a bad idea. When she finally does say something, she asks, "Have you told your manager yet?" Jared shakes his head. "You'll have to talk to her about it, too. Plus, she'll have some more advice."

There's more silence, occasionally interrupted only by Charlotte tapping away at her computer's keyboard. Probably sending an email to his manager, he thinks. He's not sure why, but he assumed the process would be much simpler. His parents most likely could have told him otherwise, but he hadn't divulged his plan to them yet. He sort of worried that the change would hurt their feelings or bruise their egos. He had both of their names, after all.

But when it was official, wouldn't the implication be obvious? People in the industry know his parents. He'd been in the industry since before he truly knew he wanted to be in it. How could it be anything but obvious?

"Sometimes people can't pronounce Jansen right," he says in an effort to break the uncomfortable tension, and as though he hadn't just given her a whole spiel about nepotism. Mispronunciation seemed like another good reason to change a name. Maybe that was one he'd tell people.

Charlotte just offers a knowing nod, plus a suggestion. "What if you drop the Jansen, then? Just a small change, an easy one. Your mother's been using Martel since she got married. There's no other Hucke for people to associate you with."

"Jared Hucke," he tries. It feels a little strange on the tongue, different. Which is odd to think because, well, it is his name, sort of. Not many people called him that, though. He's almost always Jared Jansen if either part was dropped, but he's always quick to correct. Regardless, Charlotte looks at him expectantly while he considers. Eventually, he shrugs. "It's not as cool as something like, I don't know, Jared Danger."

Charlotte rolls her eyes. "You are not using Danger."

Hey,

I feel like an ass for telling you this on Facebook, but you're in BC for break so I can't tell you in person. Nicole and I got back together. For real this time. Thanks for everything, but I don't think we should keep doing what we're doing. I'd still appreciate if you kept it all on the dl. I'll do the same for you.

I'll probably see you around campus when you get back. Have a nice Christmas and break, dude.

P.S. Any guy you end up with will be really lucky to have you.

Jared Hucke-Jansen

Fuck off, Dan.

Look, I get it. You think seriously dating a guy would be weird. That should've been obvious considering how many times you've told me that exact thing about you and Nicole getting back together. I'm an idiot and should've realized that earlier. Actually, no, I did realize it, but I should've said something earlier. I'm not here for you to experiment with while your indecisive girlfriend's messing with other dudes only to just ignore every other time. That's bullshit that no one deserves.

And kudos for having the decency to not out me to the general public, I guess, but I think you mean any guy OR girl will be really lucky to have me (thanks, he or she will be). I'm not gay, asshole. I'd say call me when you've got your shit figured out, but I don't actually want you to call me at all. You probably will see me around campus, except I probably won't be talking to you.

Have a nice life, dude.

2013

He meets Harper first, in March. She's gorgeous—blue eyes, blonde hair, full lips. She tells him stories about living in London and New York and Los Angeles and everywhere in between. Her accent's lilting and melodious, and he makes her laugh when he tries to mimic it. She kisses him at a party and he kisses her back, both of them drunk. Then again when they're sober, and that happens a few times, but it's not a big deal. They're not dating.

Then, a few months later, Tibbie comes along, all starry-eyed and head in the clouds. With her dark features, she's Harper's physical polar opposite, but she's just as beautiful. She teaches him about astrology and palm reading and dream interpreting, much of which he's skeptical about, but he indulges her anyway. She's overly affectionate and kisses him more than once, but it's not a big deal. They're not dating.

The three of them gravitate toward each other almost instantly. They hang out often when they aren't working, and when they are, too. They get along well, like they've known each other for much longer than they actually have.

*

"Do you like her?" Harper asks one day as she and Jared wait for Tibbie to arrive at one of their usual lunch spots.

"Yeah, of course I do. She's awesome," he replies easily.

She tries again. "Do you like her?"

He doesn't say anything, but Harper gives him a thoughtful nod anyway. The answer's clear enough.

*

There's no real pomp and circumstance when it happens the first time. There was no planning, no scheduled invite, nothing of the sort. They'd just been watching stupid movies, relaxed on Harper's couch.

"I like you both," she says, piping up from her spot between Tibbie and Jared while they watch the protagonists of some romcom lock lips. Her statement is simple and easy. The nonchalance in her voice sounds genuine, like this is a completely normal thing for her.

Tibbie, while also quite casual, is more complicated. She responds with flowery prose that he could never memorize word for word—something about how traditional ideas of love and monogamy are antiquated and people should give their love to whoever they want.

Jared's reaction is to not react at all. And it's not because he doesn't want to—how could he not?—but because he isn't sure how to. His mind's seemingly stopped working but is racing with a million thoughts all at the same time. Harper and Tibbie seem to notice, so they don't push immediately. They do, however, cuddle up a little closer to each other. That's nothing out of the ordinary, but with the admission, it feels different. The tension is different.

When he finally gives in, his touches are initially tentative, his kisses chaste. He approaches with curiosity because everything about this is new to him. But Harper and Tibbie guide him with confidence, and when he exhales both of their names, it feels right.

January 2015
Melanieeee. Are you gonna be home in June? Specifically during Luminato?
Wait ... Are you asking if you can stay at my place on those days?
👼
Should've seen that coming, lol. Nick and I are leaving for vacation halfway through but you could stay anyway if it's cool with him. I'll ask and let you know.
Mel, please. Nicky is in love with me. It'll be cool with him.
😒
😊
You are not the Jansen he's looking for. 🙅👾😡
Okay but I want a BB-8 😩
DON'T WE ALL?
Can I ask a q though?
No
Bitch
Why don't you just get a place here again? Like I still don't know why you gave up your old apt. You're here a lot anyway.
'Cause I'm in Van way more? I film two shows here.
One of them's ending #ripcontinuum 😭
😭😭😭😭
IDK though. I've been thinking about it. But I've also thought about LA instead for a while.
Go crazy and do all three.
Blasphemy. I am a two city man.
What would you do?
If my son was at home, crying all alone on the bedroom floor cause he's hungry?
😑
😁
Sorry, had to. Which one makes the most sense for where you're at right now?
They both do, for different reasons. Just stuff about work and agencies and auditions and shit. I won't bore you with it unless you really want to know.
I say just follow your heart. You know why? Because your dreams will fly on magical wings when you follow your heart!!!
Did you just...quote Thumbelina at me...???
The fact that you knew that right off the bat tho.
You're stupid. And unhelpful.
